Bleeding after sex

I had hormone + breast cancer, chemo/mastectomy/radio completed 18months ago. Been taking Letrazole for nearly 2 years. Tonight, for the first time, I experienced bleeding during sex.
Should I be concerned?

  • Hi Scentsylady,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

Any new symptom after a cancer diagnosis is understandably worrying.

Letrozole can cause vaginal dryness which can then cause bleeding during sexual activity. I hope the bleeding has settled down but if you have ongoing concerns, it would be a good idea to contact your breast care nurse and GP today.

This doesn’t mean to say that there is anything to worry about, but your nurse will want to know of any concerns you have. They may want to examine you and if appropriate discuss lubricants to reduce the risk of bleeding going forward.

Being intimate with your partner is important. I wonder if our information about cancer and your sex life would be useful to look at.

I really hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always give us a call to talk things through further.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
