  • Hi Gandi47

Welcome to the Online Community here at Macmillan. I hope you find it a helpful place to access support and ask questions. My name is Vanessa, and I am one of the cancer information nurses here at the Macmillan Cancer Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having tests for suspected lung cancer. I’m sure this is a worrying time for you.

Within the UK the different nations have different cancer targets which they work to. In England, the NHS work to a faster diagnosis standard. This standard means that you shouldn’t wait more than 28 days from referral to finding out if you have a cancer or not.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not have a faster diagnosis standard in place.

In Wales a 62-day target is in place. This means, that when cancer is first suspected, everyone should have a confirmed diagnosis and start treatment within 62 days.

Scotland and Northern Ireland have a similar 62-day target in place.

We do know however, that these targets are not always met. Sometimes this is because of complicated clinical situations, or where multiple tests and procedures are required to not only establish a diagnosis but also formulate a treatment plan.

It is difficult for us to say how long you will wait but please do be assured that the hospital teams will be working to the waiting times targets outlined above and will want to provide a diagnosis as soon as possible.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Take care
