Had lumpectomy ,radiotherapy -a lot 17 years ago ! But was always promised a reconstruction.

my unaffected breast is now a droopy size E , and my treated one looks like a mouldy shrivelled satsuma.Clothes are impossible,as are bras.

surgeon suggested reconstruction as bras are impossible.Told that likelihood of failure , necrosis , repeated surgery etc more than 95% by second surgeon.

I couldn’t cope with the industrial strength bra and prosthesis, and reacted to the latex.

i am supposed to be grateful to be mutilated but alive.

in addition I have skin and lung damage from the five weeks of radiotherapy.Somethoughtless doctor asked why hah I had so much treatment ? Because I had cancer and was told to ,17 years ago

  • Hello Poppyxxxjane,

Thanks for contacting us. I’m Gail, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It sounds as if you are struggling with several things currently. Persistent negative feelings about the way you look can affect your mental health, self-confidence, and relationships. It’s not shallow to be concerned about your appearance, so try not to pay attention to those thoughts or suggestions you should feel lucky to be alive. Body image struggles are real, and you don’t need to feel guilty or repress them. It’s very common to feel affected by the ways your body has changed after breast cancer treatment.

It may be beneficial to speak to a psychologist / therapist who has experience in supporting people who find it difficult to adjust to changes in body image. There may be a psychologist who works closely with the Breast Care team in the hospital where you have had discussions about breast reconstruction. Contact the Specialist Breast Care nurse or contact the consultant you’ve seen recently, via the secretary, and ask about being referred. You can also speak to your GP about referral or access a Maggie’s Centre, who often have psychologists as part of their team.

You also appear to have concerns about the risks associated with reconstruction and potential complications. You don’t mention whether a breast reduction has been offered for your unaffected breast, but may find it useful to discuss this and all your other concerns with a Specialist Breast Care Nurse. You may also find it useful to speak to someone who has had a similar experience by accessing the Someone Like Me service.

    Best wishes,

    Gail
