Hi.

I’ve been to see my GP today and been referred on the 2 weeks pathway.

I’ve had a swollen armpit for a few weeks without feeling an obvious lump without being sure it’s my lymph node.

GP has said she can fill it and isn’t sure it is a lymph so has referred to the breast clinic due to possible cancer.

I’ve been in surgical menopause for 2 years and on a high dose of HRT and age 35.

im really scared and worried.

  • Dear Sim89

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Suzanne and I am one of the cancer information nurse specialists here at Macmillan.

This must be such an anxious time for you if you have been referred to the breast clinic under the 2 week pathway for suspected breast cancer.

It is perfectly natural to worry that you may have cancer, especially if you are referred for further tests urgently.

Lumps can appear in any area of the body for various reasons, but as you have had a swollen armpit for a few weeks it is safest to have further tests just to err on the side of caution.

If may reassure you to read this information from Cancer Research which explains that more than 90 % of people referred under the 2 week pathway will not be diagnosed with a cancer. The information also explains a little about the referral and what may happen going forward.

This information about what happens at a breast clinic appointment should also hopefully help you to prepare for the appointment.

In the meantime this information around coping with fear and anxiety may help you to manage the feelings you have at the moment.

Also, if it would help to talk, you are more than welcome to give us a call on the support line on the number below.

I do hope this information is helpful Sim89, but please do reach out again if you need further support.

    Best wishes and take care,

    Suzanne, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
