Radiotherapy side-effects

Hi

Thanks in advance. My mother is 91 and has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. She had 5 radiotherapy sessions. That was about 5 and a half weeks ago. Ever since then, she has had bad stomach cramps that only go away when she goes to the toilet. She has had diarrhea all this time, and often feels sick (although isn't actually sick). There doesn't seem to be much improvement and so I am wondering whether these effects going on so long is usual and OK, or whether it is a sign of a more serious issue?

Any advice gratefully received!

  • Hello RichieNow,

Thanks for getting in touch with us during what sounds like a very difficult and stressful time. Welcome to our online community. I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line.

It’s difficult for me to say if this is a sign of something more serious but I would encourage you to contact your mum’s consultant and/or her nurse to report her symptoms as soon as possible.

With someone of your mum’s age I would be worried that she became very ill quickly.

You may wish to call her GP to report her symptoms if you are unable to speak with her cancer team or call NHS 111.

Normally, Radiotherapy side effects get worse for a few weeks after treatment and then should start to get better. Some people take a bit longer to improve.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care and best wishes,

Linda J.  (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
