Hello,  I currently going threw a cervical cancer scare! Found a growth coming from the opening of my cervix. I'm having some pain and cramping down there as well as I my hips at times,  with a little of what I think is bladder leaks. The leaks have been happening for a while. But my Dr done a pap smear to see what comes back! Im so scared its cancer! Would anything else other then cancer cause pain down there? I was hoping dr would tell me it looked like a polyp or something but he's not a gynecologist so he couldn't tell me. I kno i should of went to a gynecologist but I was not expecting to get this diagnosis of a growth. Thank you for any info or support you can give me.

  • Hi Shayroark88,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Carla and I’m one of the Cancer information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you have joined our New to the Community Forum, I hope you find it supportive.

I am sorry to read that you are having investigations due to identifying a growth on your cervix.

Your GP has performed a cervical smear test which is a helpful tool in identifying any changes to the cells of the cervix. These results may take several weeks to come back.

If they haven’t already, then I would also consider asking your GP for referral to a specialist who can examine your cervix to establish if the growth identified requires further tests or investigations to establish the cause.

You have mentioned some symptoms of pain and cramping as well as possible bladder leaks.

As nurses on the Macmillan Support Line, we don’t have access to your NHS records or investigations so would be unable to offer potential diagnosis based on the symptoms you are describing.

It may be helpful to know that there are many conditions which can present with symptoms such as these, which are more common than a diagnosis of cervical cancer. What is important is having investigations in order to best treat/ manage these symptoms.

Waiting for results can be an extremely anxious time, regardless of how the results turn out. There is no right or wrong way for you to feel while you wait. It may reassure you to know that it is common to feel scared, worried, and anxious at this time.

It is important that even though you have had a smear test, and possible referral, if you develop any new, worsening or changing symptoms please do contact your GP or NHS 111 for assessment.
