I have been prescribed anastrozole tablets but they contain lactose and I am allergic to lactose. Is there an alternative that does not contain lactose?

  • Hi Maria,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

Lactose is a common ingredient used in tablets so it’s understandable for you to be concerned as you have allergies. It might be reassuring to know that it is unlikely to cause any problems unless you have a severe allergy to lactose.

The nurses on the support line are not prescribing nurses so we are unable to advise on which is the most suitable medication for you. However, Exemestane may be an alternative for you as it doesn’t appear to contain lactose.

Going forward it would be a good idea to speak with your breast care nurse. They can speak with the hospital pharmacist in more detail about the ingredients of the medication and discuss an alternative with your consultant.

We had a question similar to yours a few years ago which you might find interesting to read.

I really hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always give us a call to talk things through further.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
