Hi, on Wednesday I was diagnosed with kidney cancer stage 2, so I have been advised that I will have to have my whole kidney removed. The same week i was also advised that I likely have BAV with mild aortic stenosis and moderate to severe aortic regurgitation, I am waiting to be seen at the hospital valve clinic coincidentally my kidney diagnosis was at the same hospital - I am keen to have the operation to remove the tumour but will problems with my heart prevent me from them giving me the surgery? I am assuming that as both diagnosis happened at the same hospital they will liaise? But what’s the likelihood my heart will be an issue?

kindly advise at your earliest convenience.

many thanks and kind regards,

bjarkha

  • Hi  bjarkha

Thank you for contacting Ask a Nurse.

My name is Helen and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line.

I am sorry to hear about your recent cancer diagnosis and in addition, that you are being investigated for a heart condition.

We don’t have access to your NHS records, therefore any questions that you may have relating to either your kidney cancer and forthcoming surgery, or treatment for the possible heart conditions need to be directed to both Specialist Teams at your local hospital. Your situation is complex and will need accurate and high-level discussion. I have attached links to British Heart Foundation and British Heart Valve Society for you to look at.

There are weekly multi-disciplinary meetings (MDT) held at most district general hospitals and larger cancer centres to discuss all patients with newly diagnosed renal cancer and this will include communication with other non-cancer specialists when required.

If you are worried that the two medical teams have not linked together to discuss your specific case, it may be worth contacting your Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist as soon as possible.

I am pleased that you have joined the Macmillan kidney cancer forum, I hope you’re finding it helpful sharing your experiences with others.

You may also wish to look at two additional websites Action kidney cancerCancer research UK.  Both these websites can provide further information and support and discuss the disease, diagnosis, stage, treatment options and practical tips for living with kidney cancer.

Waiting for appointments and further tests and investigations can be a challenging time, here at Macmillan, we offer a range of support and services you can access. We also work in partnership with BUPA to offer free counselling services.

I am glad you felt able to reach out to us and I hope this information is helpful.

If you have any further questions, please get in touch by email, webchat or phone. The Macmillan support line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks on
