Is a liver transplant a possibility

We were told yesterday that my husband’s stage 4 bowel cancer (mets across the entire liver) is not suitable for surgery. He has so far had 5 rounds of folfox and has responded really well to it. His scans showed the rumours were shrinking and his CEA has tumbled from 1750 to 275. But still surgery is not an option and we are left with chemotherapy to manage it.
We wondered whether there is ever the option to do a liver transplant if the tumour in his bowel is removed? We didn’t think yesterday to ask this question. My husband did ask if the bowel tumour could be removed (with the hope that his stoma could be reversed) but was told no, because of the risks involved in that surgery. But if the bowel tumour could be removed because we had a live liver donor (no idea whether we have!) could a liver transplant be done? Is this ever an option?

Thanks

  • Hi Jd37

Thanks for getting in touch with the online community.

My name is Sarah one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support line.

I am sorry to read that your husband’s cancer is not suitable for surgery. It is natural to want to find out more about treatment options. Understanding treatment decisions can be difficult.

Decisions about treatment are made with all information to hand. Your husband’s team will be best placed to answer about possibilities such as a liver transplant. Treatment options for bowel cancer spread to the liver are described on the Cancer Research UK website.

There are various trials and studies which have been done looking at transplantation. You may want to have a look at this one here. In the summary it explains that liver transplantation might offer a curative approach with liver only disease but has yet to be demonstrated.

You may wish to ask for a second opinion to discuss any further options of treatment. Your husband’s cancer team should be able to refer to another doctor for this. It is worth talking it through with either his consultant or clinical nurse.

I can see from your profile that you are a member of the bowel cancer and friends and family forums. I hope you are finding them supportive.

Supporting a loved one with cancer can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Please make sure you look after yourself too.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah
