Hi, I had lumpectomy/lymph node biopsy followed by 5 sessions radiotherapy in January / February. I have hard scar tissue around wound site which can be tender. I have been relatively pain free until three days ago when I started with sharp pain under op breast / rib area worse on some movement and inspiration. I am just wondering if this is an after effect of radiotherapy? Thank you.

  • Hi ConnE

Welcome to our Online Community.  My name is Tricia and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists .

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing sharp pain under the breast and rib area where you had surgery and radiotherapy.

We would always suggest that anyone who is experiencing any new or worsening symptoms seeks urgent medical advice. This could be with the GP if you can get an urgent appointment today or via  NHS 111. The latter are available 24 hours to give urgent medical advice to people.

It is always safest to get medically assessed first. Then if you get the all clear, you can look at whether you have any side effects from the breast radiotherapy . You can also discuss any ongoing concerns with the Breast care nurse or Consultant.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch at any time.

    Sending best wishes,
