Wait time

I have been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer after several months of biopsy and tests. They have not said what kind but I have been referred to the haematology specialist. When I phoned today they said I won’t get an appointment until October/november. This will be 3 months or more since being told I have cancer. My concern is the wait and the next steps and further test. Is this normal to wait this long?  Is this good news from my biopsy that is is not to worry about?  I feel all year I have been waiting.

  • Hi Nana Lou,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear of your lymphoma diagnosis and delay in seeing the Haematologist.

You are correct in that there are different types and sub-types of Lymphoma and it would be useful to know what type, stage and grade you have.

Cancer waiting times for appointments can vary considerably around the country and although they have indicated October – November, you may find you’ll be contacted sooner.

Some types are slow growing and don’t require treatment to start straight away. This approach is sometimes known as watch and wait.

However, it may be an idea to call your Haematologist’s secretary to ask for a telephone consultation with the Haematologist regards your ongoing care.

You could ask where you are on the appointment list and if there is any chance of a cancellation which might speed things up.

You could also ask if there is a Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) you could speak to or, ask for their contact details.

Waiting for results after a cancer diagnosis can be an extremely worrying time for people. Please remember we are here on the Macmillan Support Line if you need to talk.

Lymphoma Action and Blood Cancer UK are also good sources of information and support.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
