Finishing work

I've recently been diagnosed with cancer and it's a 'management' rather than 'cure' scenario. I don't really have an idea of what my timeline is at the moment, but I've gone from feeling fine to progressively more unwell over the last two months. My work place is currently running a voluntary severance scheme and I'm now seriously considering applying given my situation. If I was accepted, then I would finish work in December and I wouldn't be looking for a new job. Perhaps it's a stupid concern given I'm very unlikely to reach retirement age, but is there something I can/should do to ensure by National Insurance contributions continue?

  • Hello Putmye6a241 and thank you for reaching out to the Online Community.

Our Money Advisers can speak to you about National Insurance contributions. You're welcome to submit a web chat choosing the option 'Welfare Benefits & Grants' or you can call in on 0808 808 00 00 choosing option 1 for the support line, then option 2. There’s also information at https://www.gov.uk/early-retirement-pension on early retirement.

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you’re feeling unwell just now. How do you feel you’re managing? Do you have much support around you? We’d be more than happy to talk things through with you. We have a team of cancer specialist nurses here on the support line if you have any clinical questions you’d like to ask about your diagnosis.

We’re also here for your emotional support. Cancer can bring up all sorts of feelings and it can be helpful to talk about these to try and process what’s happening.

    Take care.

    Alex, Information and Support Adviser
