I am being told that I have a case to answer regarding three absences in 12 months ! The first two were within 9 months of my completion of 6 months chemo and 5 days radiolotherapy

my first absence was a cough/ chest infection which then triggered a trapped nerve and caused sciatica a few weeks later. Then I had 9 months clear and last month vertigo which affected only 1 shift.

I am sure that this is unfair as still within 18 months post treatment

is there any proof I can get to back up my statement please

  • Hello Dipper and thank you for contacting the Online Community.

I’m sorry to hear you have a case to answer regarding absence at work. I’m sure this is the last thing you need after all you’ve been going through.

We don’t have any teams that specialise in work issues I’m afraid, but hopefully you’ll find our publication Work and Cancer helpful. It covers employment rights and coping with the effects of treatment at work, for example, tiredness, as well as providing tips on talking about cancer in the workplace. There is also information on not going back to work and discrimination, and it also includes a list of useful organisations which includes details for Acas who might be able to help you with your query.

It sounds like you’ve been going through an awful lot with your various treatments Dipper, how are you just now? We’d be more than happy to talk things through with you. We have a team of cancer specialist nurses here on the support line if you have any clinical questions you’d like to ask about your diagnosis.

Our team of Money Advisers can perform a benefit check for you and give guidance and information about what kind of financial support might be available. They will need information about your income, outgoings and any savings/investments you might have.

We’re also here for your emotional support Dipper. Cancer can bring up all sorts of feelings and it can be helpful to talk about these to try and process what’s happening.

You can call in on 0808 808 00 00 (7 days a week, 8am – 8pm), web chat or email if you’d prefer, and you can check our website to see what local support there is.

    Alex, Information and Support Adviser

Remember you can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or by email.
