Hi can I request Macmillan nurses to come to my mums house - she is so frail and really needs some help and support, she isn’t eating after her radiotherapy and is slowing wasting away
Hi @Smurf1975, My name’s Vicky and I’m a Support Advisor’s here at Macmillan. I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, it’s so distressing to see a loved one suffering like this.
It might be a good idea to speak with your mum’s GP or her Cancer Team about how she’s struggling to eat and her frailty, it’s important they know about this so that they’re made aware of her situation.
Regarding getting a Macmillan Nurse Smurf1975, you can ask for one to be assigned through a referral from one of your mum’s health care team such as her GP or consultant. Your mum might even have been given a small green card with our number on one side and the nurses number on the other, if she has then you could contact them about getting some additional help and support.
Have you considered getting in touch with Adult Social Care, about getting some carers in for your mum, they could carry out a needs assessment to see the type of support she would need, such as personal care, equipment or even home adaptations. You can find out their contact details through her local council or maybe even speak to her GP, it may be that they could make a referral to help speed the process up?
Also Smurf1975, I’m not sure if you are aware but we have Cancer Nurses on our support lines it might be good for you to have a chat with them about your mum and how best to help her, the support line number 0808 808 00 00 open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week, or if you prefer, you can chat to them online, just sign into the chat on the main website and select ‘Question for a Nurse’.
I hope this information helps you Smurf1975, please know that the Macmillan Support Line is here for you too, as a place you can contact privately and confidentially to talk through how you’re feeling and access emotional support. We are here every day of the week from 8 am-8 pm on 0808 808 0000 or via web chat so please get in touch as much with us whenever you need some support.
