Internship Experiences

This is my fourth and final week as an intern in Macmillan’s policy team and I thought that I would try and give an overview of the work that I have been involved with.

My first experience of a large office environment, it has meant relocating - briefly - from Manchester to London, early mornings and long commutes each day but definitely a rewarding experience – and hopefully I’ve been of some help to the team.

The main focus of my work has been conducting a research project on the availability of 24 hour community nursing. This is one of Macmillan’s key policy areas for the coming year and I have been working to build-up a national picture of where this service is and is not yet available and understand the problems being faced in putting this in place.

I have also had the chance to work on projects in other areas including social care and health inequalities, producing a couple of briefing papers to help guide initial policy discussions and analyse policy from a Macmillan perspective.

As well as this I went to the Britain Against Cancer conference, attended by the Secretary and shadow Secretaries of State for Health; a Parliamentary committee meeting on health and older people; and a meeting of the UK Lung Cancer Coalition.

Away from work, one of the more surreal experiences was out team Christmas lunch, including the usual food, drink, secret Santa… and a belly dancer. No one quite knew where to look…
