As you can imagine we were totaly devastated , even more so as he has never smoked and only has the ocassional glass of wine ,but listening to others despite this being a cancer that supposedly is typical of heavy drinkers/smokers it is not always the case . Peter has now had his 6 sessions of chemotherapy ( CISPLATIN ) and has the last three of 33 sessions of radiotherapy next week . What a journey it has been , the first two weeks were fine apart from a bit of fatigue and nausea , but then his world fell arart with the most terrible side effects of the radiotherapy , the inside of his mouth is red raw and bleeds from time to time his tongue looks as though it has been put through a shredder the pain is almost unbearable at times , and he has the dreaded stringy thick mucous . His oncologist has been really good with pain killing medication morphine patches and oromorph plus mouth washes etc , but as peter said yesterday he feels at the end of his thether both emotionally and physically . At times I really do not know what to say or do except to reassure him I love him and we will get through it all , but very difficult to cope some times when i feel I am falling apart . any reassurance would be fantastic . forgot to mention he had a peg fitted prior to treatment thank goodness!!!! The hospital staff are increadibly amazing and dieticians very supportive , just feel so alone sometimes
