Dear Doctors - There's no such thing as a 'good' cancer!

1 minute read time.

At a follow-up meeting during my diagnostic phase in July 2010, the specialist who was investigating my referral condition was clearly suspicious that I had cancer but as the results of my liver biopsy were not yet in, he was not in a position to declare his findings.  However, following my revelation about flushing during this meeting, he immediately guessed the biopsy would confirm Carcinoid (the most common type of Neuroendocrine Tumour (NET)).  I can't remember much of the conversation but I vividly remember him indicating that of all the issues out there to get, this was one of the better ones.  He was using a meter analogy action with his hands swinging towards the 'good' reading!  I hadn't gone there that day to receive a cancer diagnosis but he was clearly trying to put me at ease and I'm sure it was with the best of intentions.

This is a very topical subject on forums and some patients are not happy being told their cancer is a 'good' cancer or one of the 'better' cancers to get.  Whenever this subject comes up it tends to overlap and extend into associated areas including the deception where people look so well so how can they possibly have a 'bad' cancer. If I had an opinion, I would say that no cancer is good but it's true to say that some are worse than others, e.g. certain cancers will kill lots of people quickly and that's awful.

Some cancers can be declared in remission after a period but some cancers can stay with you for the rest of your life. Some cancers can result in long-term debilitating side effects. Additionally, the consequences of treatment for certain cancers can be difficult to live with, meaning significant lifestyle changes in the long-term or for life. This is precisely why many cancer patients are angry at the suggestion their cancer is in some way a 'good one to get'.

Hi Ronnie. You made a really good point. No cancer is good. Last year I was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumour in my stomach. I think you were the first person to respond when I joined this group. My tumour was completely removed and it had only gone into 2 lymph nodes.I don't need any further treatment only close monitoring. Hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for all the information you pass on. Take care.

  • This is always one of the hot topics in the Thyroid community. We seem to have one of the cancers most often labelled as 'good'. Personally it doesn't bother me - mine has been a very positive and life-affirming experience - but for many people ANY cancer can be absolutely devastating and being told they're lucky they got that type is a source of real annoyance.

I was told that I had a bad cancer-chemo doesn't work, surgery spreads it. Then ignorant medical staff  said it wasn't a real cancer, so I've gone through this both ways. I think the terms-good- bad and certainly -not a real cancer- are sort of patronizing and childish.  Bad can have so many types of bad-----disfigurement-my site was my face;  deadly-yes, I seem to be a lone survivor because of a new method and type of treatment;  very hard to fight-no, as either it would be cured or spread, but the time was short-so it wasn't like having multiple surgeries, lots of different types of treatments- a one shot  cancer suited my personality-either the experiment would work or it would not work. It worked!!

  • That's awful Meyati.  The real cancer thing comes up a lot on my side too.  All cancers are real, all cancers are bad.

  • Hi Ronny.a

I have no idea if you'd find this interesting but I've never come across anybody with a carcinoid tumour before but I have read a very interesting book by an Indian guy who had one. It's available on Kindle if you're interested  (just click the link). I'm also happy to give you the much needed spoiler that he's alive and thriving several years later. After I reviewed his book on a consumer site, he tracked me down to thank me for my concern and to let me know that he was alive and very much still kicking.
