"1-7 June" written in an orange star, above "Volunteers' Week" "Time to celebrate"

At Macmillan, we are really excited to kick off the month with Volunteers' Week, 1-7 June.

We’re dedicating this time to celebrate and thank all our amazing volunteers for the time they’ve given to help people with cancer live life as fully as they can, over the last year and during this difficult time. Whatever you’re doing right now, whether you’ve had to pause your volunteering or not, your support is valued now more than ever.

In the Online Community, we have additional reason to celebrate and thank our volunteers, as the fantastic Community Champions, have won an incredible award.

"Macmillan Volunteer Awards The Vicky Clement-Jones Award for using a personal experience to help others." written in pink and green, with pink and green stars on the right

You may have seen Community Champions around the different groups on our Community cancer forum, helping welcome and support members. We are so proud of the way they use their own cancer experiences to help others and I’m sure you’ll agree that they are such deserving winners.

‘I have looked around the community a bit and there are certainly some "Champions"....how kind and empathetic they are - such unselfishness to spend time in responding to other is often rare these days.’ - Community Member.

The Award

The Vicky Clement-Jones Award is for an individual or group that:

  • uses their own cancer experiences to influence others
  • applies insight from their own cancer experiences to improve the lives of other people affected by cancer
  • demonstrates the impact that their role makes to other people affected by cancer.

"Meet our inspirational winners" written in green

The Community Champions, affectionately known as ‘Our Champs’, are a dedicated team of volunteers that found the Community to be a great place for support and wanted to give something back to the Community members.

Our Champs are a listening ear for those who need it most, helping people affected by cancer feel supported and less alone.

I reached out on this site and boy I did not think I would get any help or any response. I was so wrong. The people on here saved my life that day. The bond and friendship on here is so strong and genuine I can't live without it now.” – New Community member.

The Champions also report anything to the Community team that breaks our Community guidelines, ensuring that it is a safe place for all members.

"Thank you" in pink, surrounded by names of Community Champions in green "Mistymoley, Nikki65, KTathome, The BODACH, Rily, Gbear, Ronstar, The Highlander, Daloni, Latchbrook, Granny59, Smrichie5, MikeO, Src60, VickiLynne, Dreamthief, Cassie78, Arla, LexiT7, TheScriptFan, court, Lesleyhelen, Greg777, Paul1969, Chris2012." written in green, surrounded by pink stars

You can always recognise our Champions by their badges, displayed in their signatures. They look like this:

"I'm a Community champion" written in purple. Green speech bubble with a question mark in white on the left.

At the time of nomination, on average, our Champs dedicated a phenomenal 216 hours a week, night and day, to support the Community. That’s roughly 12,000 hours a year.

At the time, they’d welcomed 1,318 newcomers to our New to the Community group so far that year, only a small percentage of the people they help every day.

Between them, they look after 70+ different groups and support our now 185,000 registered members.

They support the Community day and night, and share their own stories to help others feel less alone.

'Thanks for helping me the other day...you Champs are so full of energy…and mental and emotional energy to help other people! I don't know how you do it…” - Community Member.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking the Community Champions by adding a comment below. Alternatively, if you’d like to send us your feedback privately, or nominate a member to become a Champion, please email us on community@macmillan.org.uk

  • Thank-you Steph. For me it's an honour and a privilege to be able to carry out this role and be part of this team; all I'm really doing is paying back in any way I can the amazing support and love I got when I found this place as a terrified gibbering wreck about six and a half years ago. It's rewarding and it's a pleasure, not always easy mind; also there are many "champions" on here who don't actually have the badge (yet) so they need to be acknowledged as well I think.

I can't thank Mcmillan nurses enough for the support and help they have given me and my wife since my Brain Cancer diagnosis. Jill my Mcmillan area coordinator has been fantastic. At times i have gone off the rails a bit with stress and worry about my condition but Jill has always been there for us she has not been afraid to give me a telling off. My wife has had brilliant support from Jill. She can talk to Jill about her feelings which is a good thing for my wife.Cancer affects the whole family, every family member is touched by Cancer.Without the Suppprt from Mcmillan i would have given up .A huge bug thank you to all the Volunteers who fundraise etc keep going keep raising as mych as you can.We need this brilliant organisation.

  • It’s really great to see familiar names from the breast cancer groups!! These lovely people give so much time and reassurance when you really are feeling at your lowest ebb, and most importantly they also give hope!!! I’ve spent the last year on the breast cancer forum and it’s helped me no end.
I really feel like I almost know them all by now!!

thankyou so much for your ongoing support !

  • Thank you all for your comments and for joining us in celebrating our wonderful volunteers.

MikeO, it's been an absolute honour to celebrate with you all and I couldn't agree more. We know that everyone in the Community plays a part in making sure no-one goes through cancer alone and we appreciate each and every one of you. Together, we can make such a difference.

Strummer33, I couldn't agree more and thank you for being a part of the Community.

Steviebhoy67,  Thank you for your comment and I am sorry to hear about what you've been going through, although it's good to hear that you've benefitted from Macmillan's support. I hope you also find the Community a safe space of comfort and support. Do let us know if you need any further help with anything.

Claire1974, It's wonderful to hear how the Champs and the Community have helped you, thank you so much for taking the time to comment, we really appreciate it.
