Delays in starting chemo

  • My sister in law has stage 4 womb cancer with secondaries in lymph nodes. She has had blood clots because of it and has been put onto Warfarin. As a result, they don't want to operate and have suggested chemotherapy.

She was due to start in early June but, because of continuous bleeding, has been unable to as her red blood count was too low. Each week the hospital call her in, give her a blood transfusion and then wait a week before testing her blood, by which time she has bled more and the count is down again.

This has been going on for six weeks now with, seemingly, no change. Does anybody have experience in transfusions and chemo. Do you have to wait a week between them? She is getting very down as, all the time, the hospital seems to keep saying that they need to start urgently but they go through the same pattern. Her initial diagnosis was in March and we're now July with no treatment yet.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi there,

I am sorry to here of the delays in the start of your sister in laws treatment and as I see your post is over a month old I am hoping that things have finally started happening for her.  My only advice if this is not the case is that sometimes it doesn't pay to be too much of a patient patient.  I too have been in the 'waiting in line' brigade and have recently been diagnosed with gradeII stage IIIb cancer...I am sure if I had been more 'pushy' for want of a better word, it may have been caught much sooner.  I think after such a long time playing it their way it would not be unreasonable to ask for a second opinion...sometimes this alone may be enough to ensure the consultant is more pro active in resolving the problem.  Your sister in law must be consumed with worry all the time it appears that nothing is being done to cure her so I wish her all the good fortune in getting things sorted out and pray for a good outcome for her.

Sending positive thoughts to you all,

    Jenny x
