Fear of chemo

  • I am about to start chemo quite soon. I had a gastrectomy including the duodenum, 11 weeks ago, I was very poorly for the first 7 days, Then 3 weeks after the op I had an embolism on my lung, which hospitalised me again, I have recovered very well and feel very fortunate to feel so well as I do at present. I have had a CT scan which showed no presence of cancer and my lymph nodes from my stomach are all clear, but it cells may have travelled in my blood stream and could attach anywhere in the body. Has anyone else had this phenomena?

    Thanks

  • I've never had it personally, but I know people who did. It is one of the ways cancer metastasizes besides local spread or the lymphatic system. That's why the chemo is necessary to make sure if any cancer cells did detach from the tumor that they can destroy them before they reattach somewhere. You were very fortunate to have not had any lymph node involvement since stomach cancer isn't always discovered before it's spread. I have a friend who just finished chemo/radiation. She was very fatigued and experienced some nausea but was able to complete her treatments.
  • Hi Snookie,

I do feel fortunate, but I did have a huge tumour in my stomach and duodenum that was found very late, there was very small nodule on my peritoneum, which was removed during my surgery thankfully, glad the surgeon found it at that time. I have a fear of vommitting that is why I am scared of chemo. Thanks for your input, I just need to feel much more positive which I am doing now.
