Unlock the cancer drug fund

Less than one minute read time.

Hi everyone,

You may have seen in the news today that NICE has denied the drug Everolimus as a treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (advanced kidney cancer).  I am disappointed with this decision as we think that everyone should be able to get the treatment they need no matter what cancer they have.

The government recently announced that they plan to introduce a £200 million cancer drug fund. There is a consultation going on at the moment to decide how this fund will work. We want to make sure that this fund works for people with rarer cancers so that they can access the treatment they so vitally need.

If you'd like to do something about this then you can join our campaign to unlock the cancer drug fund and make cancer treatment available to everyone.

If you, or a loved one, has a rarer cancer and have struggled with getting treatment then we would like to hear from you. Please leave your comments here or email me at campaigns@macmillan.org.uk

i recently went to the james whale conference on kidney cancer in stanstead and one of the speakers there (james larkin) works at the royal marsden in london and the marsden in sutton where i am currently being treated, he said even with this cancer fund it is still postcode treatment, he can currently prescribe a drug for someone in the catchment area of the london branch in the morning then travel 15 miles to sutton in the afternoon and he is not allowed to prescribe the very same drug (i think it was everolimus) and he said how distressing this is to him and his staff! As a patient who could in the near future need this drug it is sickening to hear that you live in the wrong area.
