1st Day without radiotherapy

Less than one minute read time.

Today is my first day without radiotherapy, it feels such s relief not to be getting ready to trip of to the hospital although I do feel a bit lost without all those people around.

The main thing that's changed is the increased mucous/ thick saliva that's being produced. There's a lot in my mouth, but I also seem to be coughing up very thick phlegm. I rinsing with salt water and alternating that with capholsol. I have a pint glass with me all the time as my spitting pot and a giant heap of toilet roll where I keep spitting into tissues.

I was awake much more often with this than I have been since the second week. I'd say about every 60-90 minutes. There's a lot of coughing too which sometimes has flecks of blood in, which has been suggested could be to do with the Damagae that's occured to the lining of the throat.

The forum is such a great tool for running your symptoms by ther people for some extra advice. Done some work from home snd emailed it in for a meeting this morning and some housework. Time for a nap. Now.

Hello DLC ... glad that your RT is all done and now the healing will slowly begin, so much patience may be required. Yes, it is strange not to be going to the hospital every day but there will be all the follow-up checks so you won't feel too ' cut off ' from your team.

The horrid thick saliva will gradually ease ... try a bicarbonate of soda mouth rinse to help cleanse your mouth as well as the salt one. Some patients have found that rinsing / spitting out with a flat Coke drink can help break up that mucus so worth a try ?

Oh, and don't try to over-do things ( I know ... nag, nag ! ) but your body now needs to recover from all those traumas thrown at it - the housework can wait ; )  Take care and enjoy that nap !

Hello DLC.  Have you tried kitchen roll instead of tissues?  I found that stronger and more absorbent.  Or pehaps you're daintier than me.  You said you use a pint glass as a spitting pot, I used to have a bucket!

The coughing at night was the worst bit for me, I would wake up every hour or so.  I did find it helped to sleep propped up on lots of pillows.

Like Joycee I don't want to nag but I would suggest less emailing work and doing household chores and a lot more napping!  x
