Fit & well as I head towards 2 year anniversary

Less than one minute read time.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to drop a line as I haven't had much time to be on the site recently due to a busy domestic life!

I'm coming up to the 2 year anniversary of when the melanoma returned in my lymph nodes (13 years after the primary mole was removed) & I'm very happy to say that I am still feeling fit & healthy & my consultant is very happy with my rude health! I just wanted newly diagnosed members on the site to be aware that, in the words of my consultant "A diagnosis of the spread of melanoma does not necessarily mean a death sentence". I didn't put much store in her words 2 years ago but I am mightly thankful for them now.

I know things could change in a flash in the future, but having got this far without a recurrence, I find it easier to be more positive about my health & I want to send my best wishes to all melanoma sufferers in the hope they too can feel positivity in their fight against this dreadful disease. I hope this blog brings a little sunshine on a not too sunny summers day!

As I lie here trying to get to sleep (0044hrs) even having taken sleeping tablets I take a great deal of reassurance from your posts. I found out earlier this week that the abdominal lump that was removed 3 weeks ago is metastic melanoma and to say I was devasted is an understatement! Being a health care professional I have read too many articles on statistics regarding prognosis and felt very overwhelmed and helpless. Both this site and melanomates on facebook have given me back perspective and made me realise that real people are continuing their lives with this really scary disease and that being positive will help me with the challenges to come x

    Hi Mazz

It's good to speak to another 'old timer'. I'm sure there are a few more of us but, like with me, everyday life takes over again & it's hard to find the time to come on the site and give others a little encouragement. I know Marsha is another 'old timer' (forgive me Marsha for the expression but I'm finding it hard to find one that covers our situation)! and she does a great job giving advice to the new members on this site. Long may we all to continue to be in 'rude' health.

    Hi Bernie,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis but I just wanted to say that you are in good hands under the Leeds melanoma team. Mr Peach (plastic surgeon) is a real gent & a great consultant and Prof Newton Bishop (who I have been under for 15 years now) is a lovely caring professional. I can't praise the whole team (including the oncologists) highly enough so you will be well looked after. I know being in the health care profession you must be finding it hard to deal with all the information that is available to you but you will find that most melanoma patients will advise you not to pay much heed to statistics etc as they are not a true reflection of this disease because of it's unpredictability. Instead, just try to focus on the information the team give you and, as you have already found, the help, advice & listening ear that the members on this site & the Facebook site are happy to share. If I can be of any help don't hesitate to drop me a private message.

Good luck with your treatment Bernie - keep us updated as to how you are going on.

Keep up the good work Mazz - whatever you are doing is obviously working!

    Love Angie
