Low Iodine Diet Help - www.thyca.org

2 minute read time.
Hi, I was reading the messages and found myself somewhat relieved to see the term "Hurtle", as I too had the diagnosis of Hurtle Cell Cancer about 4 months ago. So I guess it was a comfort. I had my RAI just over a month ago. I have worked in between my surgeries (two) and I am back at work again. Apart from follow up hospital appointments; I guess life is pretty normal - commuting, housework, cooking, ironing, taxing son to weekend sporting events etc. Not sure what the future holds cancer wise, but I am pretty confident that it'll be fine. I am feeling a little cross at the moment, I'm sure this will pass and hopefully quickly - I'm missing my smile. Anyway, I was moved to write this "blog" to help anyone that is dreading the low iodine diet. I can only recommend what helped me; give it a try (unless you already have :o) ). There is a great website called www.thyca.org. This site provides a free downloadable Low Iodine Cookbook. I went on a low iodine diet for 3 weeks. I had decided, because of the Hurtle cell, to go on a virtually iodine free diet. The hospital didn't recommend this, I just felt that although the RAI was designed to rid me of all the remnant thyroid tissue, if there was a little stray Hurtle anywhere else in my body, with only a 10% chance of uptake, I was going to try and zap it. The fact that there are other organs in the body that also take up iodine (but nothing like thyroid tissue does, so please don't let this panic anyone) didn't bother me... because I didn't know about that until after the treatment when I felt as sick as a pig for 9 days. Not sure if there was any link between the sickness and my extreme approach, but hey in the absence of information, I have no idea and I draw my own conclusions. Sorry, back to the point of this entry. Chocolate brownies! Pancakes! Stuff that you fill up with without guilt or dairy products! The chocolate brownies in this cookbook saved me. Oh and the odd glass of wine - that doesn't contain any iodine. If anyone does have to have a second RAI or go on the diet again I think the bigger problem for me will be coming off of the thyroid replacement hormones. So give www.thyca.org a try My best wishes to everyone. Nicola
