Helping my MIL through her treatment

Less than one minute read time.

Hi

My MIL has just started her chemo (yesterday). She was very upbeat and was, pleasantly suprised at how much better it was than she had feared and initillly thought. She returned home after 2 hours drip feed treatment with steroids and was very positive. Today, she has woken in a very different place. She has been unable to stop crying. She says that she does not feel unwell or seem to be suffering any side effects from yesterdays ordeal. It is obviously distressing to hear her so upset and I have summised that it could be the shock and possible relief that yesterday was not as bad as she had thought it was going to be. She has her sister and my FIL with her so we dont wish to rush up and see her, but is there anyone who could confirm or help with our concerns for her?

Thank you
Mark

    Hi Mark,

I'm sure you're right. After being stressed before chemo, it's a relief to let things out, and a good cry won't do any harm at all. Bear in mind that chemo itself does mess you up emotionally, and steroids are well-known for it too. In a few days she will calm down and she should be back to normal before her next session. She should be taking in plenty of fluids to ensure no toxins hang about in her kidneys, but don't worry if her appetite is poor at first, it will soon pick up again.

    With very best wishes,

Sorry for the duplicate reply, my laptop is so unreliable these days. It's NOT Macmillan's fault, in case anyone's worried!
