Bone Mets and Fractures

1 minute read time.
Hi Everyone Sitting in my sick bed and bored stupid, anyone else suffered a fracture after dx of bone mets? I have had a considerable amount of pain in my right leg and hip for sometime but over the last couple of days it has got a lot worse and made me feel quite ill. Anyway after seeing my oncologist for a routine check up, he didn't seem to concerned about this pain but suggested I had a dental check up so that he could start bone strengthening treatment next month. The following day I had a routine appointment with my Palliative Care Consultant at the local hospice, he was concerned that I was in so much pain and suggested that we increase some of my medication and get an x-ray done so he could rule out any fractures. Also gave me a prescription for some pain relief in lozenge/lollipop form. We went to the local hospital and got the x-ray done straightaway. However, I was in a significant amount of pain after the x-ray and have been unable to put any pressure on my right leg since. The consultant rang when we got home and said that although there was no sign of significant damage to the right hip, I had small pelvic bone fracture and he suggested rest and taking things easy for the foreseeable future. Has anyone else suffered a fracture since diagnosis as a result of weakness in the bones following bone mets? I am already bored and only on day one of rest! All and to top it all managed to get a dental appt next week, but my dental surgery is in an old building with 4 flights of stairs and no lifts so something tells me I have no chance of getting this done this week. Thanks for listening J xx

Hi I know that Caroledico had a fractured arm and had to have a plate in to fix it and then RT. I dont know anyone who has had any pelvic fractures but I know about bone pain cos of my own mets. It sounds a bit horrible for you - I wonder whether you could ring the dentist and see if they can offer any suggestions as to how you can get upstairs - they must surely have disabled patients who also need access - it is the law now to make accommodations for them after all.

I have had RT to most of my bone mets to relive pain - I found the Zometa drip also helped wih the bone pain immenseley - I have now withdrawn Zometa though because I began with Jaw pain etc and they now believe it is the early signs of the jaw bone losing blood supply. SInce then I have been trying diferent pain meds to see which one works best. (now trying Gabapentin - its going ok)

I am sorry I can't be of more help I do feel for you and know how sore it can be. If you are able to use ibruprofen that is best for bone pain (I can't it upsets my stomach lining) - but steroids will also do the same job (4mg of Dexamethasone in the morning sorts me out) So maybe ask your Mac nurse (if you have one)  or GP to get your pain under conrtol. I do hope it can be made better for you. Sending hugs Jools xxxxxxx
