It is a time to recognise the important role carers play in supporting loved ones through cancer and to highlight the support available to them.

We know that caring for someone with cancer can be both rewarding and difficult. It can bring many feelings and challenges, and it is not always easy to know where to find help and support.

At Macmillan, we want to help people understand the experiences and challenges carers can face. In this blog, we share some of the support and information available in the Online Community, where carers, family members and friends can connect with others, share experiences, and find support from people who understand.

So, what challenges do carers face?

Many carers find themselves juggling multiple responsibilities, including work, childcare, household tasks and financial pressures, alongside providing care and support for a loved one. This can leave carers feeling overwhelmed and struggling to balance competing demands.

One member of our Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum shared “I just feel overwhelmed by everything, trying to keep down a full-time job, caring for my partner, the house, the money worries as he can't work, the struggle to try and navigate the benefits system.”

Supporting someone with cancer can also feel incredibly lonely. Caring responsibilities may leave little time or opportunity to socialise, pursue hobbies, or maintain connections with friends and family. As a result, many carers find themselves feeling isolated at a time when they need support themselves.

One member shared in the Carers only forum “I am really struggling, I sometimes feel very lonely even though I live with my husband”. With another community member in the forum stating “I feel like a ghost in my own life, no one sees that I need help as well. I don't even know how to raise that issue with people. I only feel seen when I help, otherwise I feel so lonely and unsupported.”

Get support

You can talk to other carers and share your experiences in our forums, including the Carers only forum, Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum and family and friend’s forum. These forums are safe and friendly places where you can share how you feel, ask questions, and get support from people who understand what you’re going through.

One member in our Carers only forum shared “I am so grateful to this Macmillan community. I think it has been the only place I haven’t had to fake it! Fake not being totally overwhelmed, fake not being in floods of tears after a letter or appointment. I think having this community both online and a phone call away is such a lifeline to be able to share fears and feelings with people who truly understand what you are going through.”

Share your experience

We’d love to hear from you about your experience being a carer. Your experiences may help others in a similar situation.

Please feel free to reply to this blog and share:

What are your experiences being a carer?

What do you enjoy or value most about being a carer?

How do you look after your own wellbeing while supporting someone else?

What support, information or resources have you found most helpful?

What advice would you give to someone who is new to caring for a loved one with cancer?

To all carers in our community, thank you for everything you do.

Our Community Champions - "the 'glue' that binds us all together!"

Volunteers Week takes place from 1st to 7th June 2026.
Why did our Champions choose to volunteer on the Online Community?

We asked our online Community Champions why they decided to volunteer on the Online Community and how do they feel when they support others on the site.

Millibob said:

"Once I was confident, I began helping other Community members with their personal journey, and I was asked if I wished to volunteer. I gave it some thought and decided it was a good idea to put back into the Community what I had taken out!

Supporting others who are in the situation I was in 4.5 years ago gives me a great feeling of satisfaction, as I know just what a cancer diagnosis can do to your mental health. It's great to know that I have helped others who are where I was at the start of my journey. The satisfaction I have from seeing someone in a panic, not knowing about their cancer and slowly realising there is hope is brilliant."

Rily said:

"I joined this community when I was first diagnosed with cancer. I was otherwise fit and healthy at the time, and I was devastated. I grew up at a time when the word was only whispered in corners of the room. The good folk here guided and supported me through my darkest days, and I could express myself here with things I could not say to my family. People here could understand. When I was cleared, I started to try and help others by giving something back. Someone noticed what I was doing, and I was invited to be a Community Champion. I felt honoured. That was over 10 years ago, and I am still here. Just a simple "Thank You" for my posts still gives me a warm glow even after all this time.

This place now reminds me of the Eagles' Hotel California words, "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."

Thehighlander said:

"A year or so after my last treatment, I was doing some research on the Macmillan Website for a talk I was going to be doing along with my Haematology CNS to 2nd year Nursing Students and accidentally found the Community….. I was surprised to find a group that covers my rare type of Lymphoma, so I started to interact within the group… the Macmillan Community Team noticed me and invited me to become a Community Champion… this was back in June 2017.

Peer support is ever so important as this simple connection immediately assures people they are not alone… and a support relationship can be built, resulting in positive and real life support. A number of years ago, a new member arrived in one of our Lymphoma Groups in an overwhelming panic and distraught as she was convinced… based on random Google searches, that her 2 young children would not have a mum growing up with them…… After spending time supporting her and giving her up to date, accurate information, lived experience and giving her the questions she needed to ask at her first appointment, she returned saying the in her time of need, I was like a guardian angel had come and sat beside her and guided her through a challenging time. She went on to have successful treatment and is now enjoying life with her children……. That makes me smile.

Irishgirl16 said:

"I used the site and the helpline during my own treatment and found it helpful. I realised people can be reluctant to talk about what they are going through to friends and family, and the online community is somehow a much easier place to be able to share and get support.

I started to reply to others naturally and then thought that perhaps if I became a champion, I could perhaps get some training to be able to help others more confidently and support even better. Maybe it’s because I work in HR, but I have a strong desire to help others, and if some good can come out of my cancer experience, then I want to use that for others. It makes me personally feel good when I receive feedback on how I have helped others, it gives me a buzz!"

Beesuit said:

"I found this community while I was waiting for my diagnosis. I am an internet addict ( selective, mind you).

I was a Vet before I retired, so I have a deal of medical knowledge, and I have always considered myself as a caring sort of person. I spent my professional life at the coalface of human angst, so I gradually morphed into trying to help and sympathise with fellow cancer victims. It's a frightening place to be if you rely on Dr Google for explanation, a Dr completely devoid of compassion and reassurance. Watching more seasoned members here guided me in how I could and couldn't help. I enjoyed seeing terrified people lose their panic and relax into the inevitability of their treatment.

Out of the blue, two Champs approached me to ask whether I would consider a more structured role, so here I am. Above anything else, it is an honour to have the trust of the guys I've helped, and many of us are still in touch years after they have left their cancers and this Community behind."

Latchbrook said:

"I didn't join the community until after I'd finished my treatment for melanoma and only found it when googling looking for positive stories.

I'd been a member for a while when I was approached by one of the Community Team asking if I'd consider being a community champion. Apparently, the then melanoma CC had recommended me. I thought about it for a while and then decided I wanted to help if I could.

Even if I don't get feedback from those I've responded to, I get an enormous amount of pleasure knowing that I've hopefully made the whole cancer journey less scary."

"I stumbled across the online community when I was diagnosed with metastatic sarcoma to the lungs. I didn’t really know where I fitted in, as my cancer is very rare, but found a great bunch of people in the lung group who were all incredibly welcoming.

The lung group champ at the time was Gina, a 34 year old lady who had been diagnosed with lung cancer the year before. The encouragement and support she gave everyone, even at her lowest points, just showed what an amazing young lady she was. Just before she passed away, she asked me to continue to pull the “newbies” into the life boat.

Shortly after I was asked if I would like to become a champ, and how could I refuse. To be able to support people, make them feel safe and heard, is an honour, and I hope I’m doing Gina proud."

As the Online Community is open 24/7, being a Community Champion provides great flexibility as to when you can volunteer.

The Online Community brings together people affected by cancer, whether they are living with cancer themselves, supporting a loved one, or caring for someone. It’s a place where people can share their experiences and talk to others who understand what they’re going through. We see every day how powerful peer-to-peer support can be, whether that’s through connecting with someone in a similar situation or asking our friendly experts questions about cancer.

As a Community Champion, you can help support others online while also building your own communication and digital skills. You’ll also have access to training resources from Macmillan to support you in the role.

It can be full of family, good food, prayer, and celebration. But if you are living with cancer, Eid might feel different this year.

You may feel more tired. You might not feel well enough to join in as much as you would like. Or you may feel sad that things are not the same.

If this sounds like you, you are not alone. The Macmillan Online Community is here to support you.

Why Eid can feel different

Cancer can change your routine, whether that is due to having treatment, dealing with side effects, feeling low or worried or simply needing more rest.

Meanwhile, Eid often brings busy days with visitors, festive mealtimes and long celebrations. This can feel like a lot and you may also feel pressure to join in, even when your body needs something different.

It is okay if Eid does not look the same this year and you need to adapt.

Macmillan colleague Kullerz Kaur, diagnosed with ovarian cancer and celebrating Eid, shares the following tips:

“One thing that can really help when balancing Eid celebrations and living with cancer is giving yourself permission to celebrate in a way that works for you. Eid can look different from year to year, and it’s okay to adapt traditions, pace yourself and prioritise rest when needed.

Sometimes the smallest moments, sharing a meal with loved ones, joining prayers online, or simply spending quality time together, can feel just as meaningful. It can also help to lean on family and friends for support and be open about what feels manageable physically and emotionally."

"Eid is about connection, reflection and togetherness, and even during difficult times, those moments of joy and support can still shine through.”

Get Support

The Online Community has supported hundreds of thousands of people affected by cancer.

It is a place where you can be honest about how you feel, ask for support and hear form others with shared experiences.

You can share your experiences and speak to others on our forums, such as the Living with cancer as a South Asian person forum, Religion, spirituality and prayer forum, or find your cancer type forum.

And if you don’t want to post, you are welcome to just read different discussion and explore the community at your own pace.

You may also find it helpful to speak with family, religious community members, or your healthcare team about how you’re feeling this Eid. Support is also available from organisations like Safeena, which offers culturally and faith-informed cancer support, and the British Islamic Medical Association, which provides guidance that brings together faith and medical advice.

It is a social term that those living with cancer use to describe family and friends not being there to support them once they have told them about their cancer.

“Have any of you experienced cancer Ghosting? It’s where friends and relatives suddenly disappear when you announce that you have cancer. It’s a recognised syndrome apparently- Google it. I am afraid I have experienced it. It can have a big impact.”
Community member, Cancer ghosting discussion, Bladder cancer forum

“Since my diagnosis last year my friends have all disappeared. Messages have stopped, and I'm left with my husband and dog. My husband is my rock, but I miss the distraction my friends provided. It makes the journey hard. No meeting friends for coffee or gossip, no support for the hubster. I'm not sure what I did wrong lol. I just feel so trapped. Nowhere to go other than appointments, no one to see other than medics.”
Community member, Ghosted by friends discussion, Emotional support forum

You don’t have to feel alone when processing your cancer diagnosis. Online forums like our Online Community can be a safe and supportive space for you to ask questions, share personal experiences, and talk about how you are feeling. You may find that you are not alone with how you are feeling.

“I get very lonely too and, in my head! I need to be with other people to gain a better perspective so I'm trying to join more clubs and volunteering etc. I hope I've helped.”
Community member, Living alone with cancer discussion, Cancer chat forum

I sent out my dates for treatment and every single one has been filled with a chaperone. Whilst you physically may not need it….emotionally it’s lovely to have the company and as time goes on you will get very tired.”
Community member, Newly diagnosed discussion, Anal cancer forum

I don't really watch them as such, just having them on in the background seems to help! My other half doesn't mind either, so long as I keep the volume down....Also, sounds of nature playing in the background is another thing. I love the sound of the sea and you can buy loads of nature sounds on CD or other formats...it is soothing.”
Community member, Awake and up all night discussion

As most of our members know, cancer can cause a range of emotions, including stress. Stress can impact mood, sleep, and overall wellbeing. Managing stress can be a challenge, so this blog features some coping strategies and lived experiences.

Tips to help you manage stress

Change your environment

Something as simple as breathing in fresh air can help when stress gets out of control. When you feel under pressure, staying in the same environment for too long may make things worse. Before you know it, words seem to lose meaning and it’s hard to concentrate. Sometimes, it feels like your brain has suddenly stopped working, and this feeling can cause you to panic. Changing your scenery can help to refresh your thoughts and calm you down. Remove yourself from the stressful environment for a few minutes to remind yourself there is a bigger picture.

“Something my GP talked to me about was trying to get out for a walk regularly, especially if this can be around trees. Stopping and listening to bird song etc can help calm any stress I am feeling.”
Community member, Carer’s only forum

Try a ‘Brain dump’

A Brain dump is a term used to offload all the thoughts in your head. Making a list or writing thoughts down can help you deal with stressful situations. Sometimes thoughts can feel overwhelming so it can help to get the information out of your head and onto paper. You could use a diary, post-it notes, or even your phone. Find something that works for you and allows you to free up some space in your head. When things are written down in front of you, they can often seem more manageable and less intimidating.

Why not start your own blog here on the Community? Blogs can help diarise your experiences, and if you share with others how you are feeling, you may find you are not alone.

Click here to start your own blog. The blog post ‘Writing for healing’ has some useful tips to help you get started.

“One of my key coping mechanisms… is journaling. Have you tried it? Writing everything down can be so cathartic. Sometimes seeing the words written on the page takes the fear out of them too. If you've not tried it, give it go.”
Community member, Brain cancer forum

Exercise and movement

Exercise isn’t just for maintaining good physical health. It also helps your mental well-being. Even gentle exercise, like going for a walk, gives you time to focus on energising your body. Physical activity will also encourage your brain to release chemicals (called endorphins) that can lift your mood and help you handle stress. It can also make you feel more in control, because you’re doing something for yourself.

There are some tips for exercising safely when living with cancer on the Macmillan website.

“I know for me if I sit at home and worry, things feel worse. So, I try to exercise by walking, I try to eat healthily. I spend time with family and friends and I have hobbies.”
Community member, Womb cancer forum

Food for the body and soul

Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, enjoying fresh food and drinking plenty of water will improve your mood and energy levels. For most people, a healthy diet includes lots of fruit and vegetables, some starchy foods, such as potatoes, some meat or fish, some dairy products, and a little fat, salt and sugar. It’s normal to not always feel like eating well, and sometimes we eat our favourite foods to treat ourselves. This is also important for socialising and enjoying our day-to-day lives. But in general, a healthy, balanced diet can help give us the energy we need to handle stressful situations.

What makes a healthy balanced diet? Read the information on Macmillan’s website

Talk about your feelings

Sometimes, stress can make you feel like withdrawing from people, as you might not feel confident putting your feelings into words. Communicating with people around you can help so your emotions don’t take over. Even if you don’t want to discuss the things making you stressed, talking generally can take your mind off things and help you relax. It’s often useful to remind yourself of what exists outside of the stressful situation you are currently experiencing.

The ‘Talking about cancer’ booklet includes some useful guidance on understanding people’s responses and how you can put your feelings into words. All Macmillan information booklets can be viewed online, downloaded or ordered from the website for free.

Start a discussion in our Online Community forums to connect with others who may be feeling a similar way.

“This forum can often assist with understanding and shared experiences.”
Community member, Bladder cancer forum

It could be doing a hobby, reading a book, or watching some TV. Whatever makes you happy. Taking some time to relax is important for keeping stress levels low. Lots of members share poetry, art and other things they do to express themselves and their cancer experiences.

“I try to defuse these feelings by distracting myself with music, sometimes I watch some comedy which was a past favourite - even if I have seen the content many times before.”
Community member, Bladder cancer forum

Don't underestimate the power of sleep

While we sleep, our brains release chemicals that stop our bodies from making stress hormones. So, when we are having difficulty sleeping, our bodies never fully ‘calm down’. Allowing yourself time to relax before bed and creating a routine can help signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep. Being more active during the day, regulating the temperature in your bedroom or having a bedtime snack (avoiding caffeine, alcohol and sugar) may also help. You should do whatever creates a calm atmosphere that you feel comfortable in. If you continue to experience problems, talk to your GP.

If you are awake and up in the night, join the Cancer chat forum, where there is an ongoing discussion during the night.

“The other thing that helps some people is having a good sleep routine. I find I sleep better if I am physically tired (so I go for walks etc) and also have a winding-down, relaxing routine in the evening. I have something light for tea and then relax with a bit of tv or listen to music. I then turn it all off about an hour before bed and try to have a relax in a warm bath. I then have a drink and go to bed. I find that if I go to bed and try to get up at the same time each day- it can help. I try to keep my bedroom warm and cosy and just turn on my bedside light if needed.”
Community member, Womb cancer forum

Macmillan are committed to making cancer care fairer for everyone. This includes making sure that everyone has access to the right cancer support and encouraging people to seek help sooner.

We want to make sure that the support available in our Online Community reaches people in farming and rural communities. To start the conversation, we have asked people from Farming Community Network what they wish they had known when they have been affected by cancer.

Advice for farmers, from farmers living with cancer

“For many people, speaking with other farmers can be especially valuable — they understand the unique pressures, worries, and practical challenges that come with farming life in a way few others can. Sometimes a friendly face and talking with someone who knows the world you’re living in can make all the difference.” – FCN member

We know that being diagnosed with cancer can offer unique challenges for farmers. We want to get the conversation started, so that people from the farming community can connect with others to share experiences and support.

Advice for farmers when you're diagnosed with cancer

Members of the FCN have offered advice based on their experience of being diagnosed with cancer as a farmer.

"Accept offers of help, even if only for a short time"

"Where possible, share responsibilities with family members or trusted workers"

"Look at ways to reduce workloads temporarily, such as reducing stock numbers or using contractors"

"Consider contingencies you might make / have an emergency folder prepared in case for any reason you are unable to work for a time"

"Create some written instructions for daily routines - using whiteboards, shared calendars, or simple checklists to keep everyone aligned"

"Think about access to systems that are vital to the day to day running of the farm, e.g. log in details or who has permission to communicate with authorities such as the bank and Rural Payments Agency (RPA) or Rural Payments Wales (RPW)"

Advice for farmers when you are going through cancer treatment

We know how important it is for people to find information that is relevant to them. The Online Community can help by connecting farmers with others facing similar experiences. Farmers from the FCN have offered their tips on going through treatment for cancer.

"Some treatments can cause you to be fatigued. Tiredness can increase the risk of accidents, especially when working with machinery or livestock. Don’t take on too much or push yourself too hard."

"Infection and biosecurity awareness  Farms can carry a higher exposure to bacteria, dust, and animal-borne infections. If your immune system is affected, small precautions can make a big difference. Some cancer treatments lower immunity. You may wish to ask your healthcare team whether this applies to you. "

"You might also consider limiting contact with sick or newborn animals; avoiding exposure to slurry, manure, and dust , planning alternatives for higher-risk tasks during treatment , planning your work around treatment."

"Once in a cycle you may get to know which days you will feel best and when you may start to feel side effects    · depending on your treatment, you may require medical devices to be in situ, such as cannulas or catheters. Chat through these options with your clinician and be open and honest about your work, particularly if you are working with livestock or carry out heavy lifting. Sharing this information helps them support your safety and treatment effectively"

"Infection and safety During treatment:   · wash hands thoroughly after farm work   · change clothes and footwear before hospital visits   · avoid assisting with lambing or calving if advised   · clean cuts and wounds promptly   · avoid exposure to potentially infectious situations · Contact your healthcare team immediately if you develop signs of infection, such as a fever. It is advisable to have an accurate thermometer at home to check your temperature."

"You may also wish to:   · avoid working alone where possible   · reduce tasks that require strength, balance, or long periods of concentration   · be honest with yourself as to whether you really feel able to safely carry out tasks on the farm. Treatments and side effects are varied and can affect you in many ways."

Advice for farmers following cancer treatment

"Return to farm work gradually.  Recovery is different for everyone. You may find it helpful to build up activity slowly and review safety and biosecurity as your strength returns. It will take time to adjust, and you may have to change things or get new pieces of equipment, for example a change of handling systems to make life easier."

Some people use online AI tools to find information. From finding opening times for shops and looking for travel information when planning a trip. When it comes to cancer care, there is lots of information AI can provide, but do you know what information can be trusted? In this blog, we explore how Community members have used Artificial intelligence, and how AI is being used in cancer care.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that helps computers perform a variety of tasks in ways that used to require human intelligence. From understanding language, analysing data, and even providing information.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is both part of the problem and a potential solution. Most of us will be familiar now with AI-generated summaries of our internet searches, but current AI models can only sort through what is there, not place a value judgment on it.

If the internet is full of misinformation, AI may then repeat that.

Our Chief Medical Officer, Professor Richard Simcock, wrote the Tackling misinformation in health blog. It explores cancer truths in the context of misinformation, disinformation and how we can work to combat these.

How to find information you can trust?

It is common to feel overwhelmed when you have lots of information to process. It’s important that you access information you can trust. There is a lot of misinformation online so using trusted sources of information can help you make decisions and feel reassured.

The ways Community members have used AI

Artificial intelligence may also help with practical needs and support development in cancer care. Here are some ways Community members have used Artificial intelligence in their cancer experiences:

“This morning, I made audio recordings of my voice, using a script largely provided by Chat GPT, which aimed to combine all the necessary phonetic sounds with recordings that my kids might also find useful (but mainly the former). I can use a service to create an AI model of my voice. Yeah, I know it sounds pretty Black Mirror. But if anyone wants to know more, ask away. :)

P.S. I haven't been able to record the whole thing yet. Because one section of the script where I talk to my children is currently IMPOSSIBLE to record without blubbing!”
-Community member, ‘referral for tongue biopsy’ discussion, Head and neck cancer forum

“Everyone’s side effects little different, so just keep good communication with your oncology team. I also follow research in oncology, groups like Ardigen working on AI-driven drug discovery, it give me some hope how treatments keep improving.”
-Community member, ‘TC chemotherapy’ discussion thread, Breast cancer forum

"Today, ChatGPT also created a pain tracker Google Sheet for me, so I could keep track of the pain in my tongue and gain perspective over that…it created a base script for me to help me record my voice for a potential AI model.”
-Community member, ‘Referral for tongue biopsy’ discussion, Head and neck cancer forum

The Online Community is a great place to hear from others about their experiences. You can also ask clinical questions to our Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

In this blog, we’re highlighting conversations from the Online Community about PICC lines, and how you can take part.

Getting a PICC line fitted

For many members, the idea of having a PICC line fitted can feel worrying at first. In the Breast cancer forum, some members shared that the procedure itself was much easier than they expected.

“the insertion of the PICC was absolutely painless, in fact I did not even know the procedure had been done.”

“I was terrified of having it inserted but it didn't hurt me either.”

Another member described how the process felt straightforward, especially with support from experienced nurses.

“it was honestly okay, and the specialist nurse was so experienced that I felt quite comfortable.”

How a PICC line helps with treatment

A common theme across forums was how much easier a PICC line can make treatment.

“what a game changer, no messing around trying to find a vein”

“I was so grateful later as all the chemo and blood tests were done via the PICC line so I had no pain or discomfort.”

Getting used to daily life with a PICC line

Adjusting to daily life with a PICC line can take time. While many members found the benefits outweighed the downsides, they also shared some of the small, everyday changes that come with it.

“I don't know if I will ever get used to something dangling from my arm, but that's ok."

“Even with the annoyance of trying to shower and other minor inconveniences, still glad I opted for the PICC line.”

The animation below outlines what a PICC line is, how a PICC line is put in and what to expect during the procedure.
www.youtube.com/watch

PICC line practical tips from members

Members also shared practical tips based on their own experiences.

One important tip was around dressing changes and skin care.

“make sure the skin is dry before they put the new dressing on”

This was echoed by another member who experienced irritation.

“My skin was oozing, sore and swollen… due to… moisture to the area”

Others suggested using helpful items to manage day-to-day life:

“I would recommend purchasing the waterproof arm protector for when taking showers”

Exercising with a PICC line – Tips and advice from a cancer information nurse specialist

One of our cancer information nurse specialists provided some helpful information about exercising with a PICC line.

“You can still do some exercise or physical activity if you have a PICC line. However, there are some things you will need to be aware of:

You need to keep your PICC line dry. Your cancer team can give you a waterproof cover to stop it from getting wet when you are having a bath or a shower. However, you should avoid swimming if you have a PICC line in. This is because of the risk of infection.

You should also avoid doing any activity that might dislodge the line. This includes any vigorous upper-body exercises, such as golf or tennis.

You can ask your cancer team about exercises you can safely do while you have a PICC line in.”

If you have a clinical question, you can post in our Ask a Nurse forum. Our Cancer Information Nurse Specialists are here to help.
