Being diagnosed with cancer is a tough experience. But for those going through it, telling the family can be a challenge in itself.
Maybe you’re worried about how your family will react to your diagnosis, or you feel you don’t want to bring distress or worry to those you’re closest to. The shock of your news may make it very difficult for your family, but the best way to overcome this is to talk about it.
Cancer Talk Week is about, quite simply, talking about cancer. We understand the difficulties in beginning that conversation with your nearest and dearest – especially as they’ll most likely want to avoid upsetting you by bringing up the subject. Being open with them will help your family to understand what you’re going through and how you’re feeling, and they’ll be able to give you the support you need. But where do you start?
Read our handy guide to talking about cancer to your family for advice and tips, and remember anytime you need to talk to someone our friendly support team is ready and waiting for your call – you can give them a ring for free on 0808 808 00 00 (Monday to Friday, 9am – 8pm) for advice and support on breaking the news to your family.
For this year’s Cancer Talk Week, we’ll be hosting a live webchat this Thursday at 12pm with Relate councillor Sue Parkes, who’ll be on hand to answer any questions you have about how cancer has affected your relationship with your family. So if you have any questions for her, please drop in and join the chat from 12pm.
Cancer Talk Week is running from today to Sunday 29th January.

Im sure this will be very useful for many people. Thanks :)
Its hard to tell those you love. I think it somehow makes the situation more real...maybe thats why its so difficult. Talking always helps, telling those you love will feel like a weight being lifted from you and you'll benefit from the support of those closest to you.
Great post Melissa x
