I feel angry at the District Nurse

1 minute read time.
As some of you may know, my mum is currently ill with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. She is on Hydroxycarbamide Chemo tabs and they have upped to help the blasts go down. She is really struggling to eat and even though she is having really small amounts, she is still drinking liquids. She is in bed most of the time as she feels too weak to get out. She keeps getting stomach cramps and is sometimes sick after eating. We have tried her on Gaviscon, flat coke, small sips of water, small bits of food etc, but still feels awful. She will be going into a hospice on Tuesday/Wed for respite car. Hopefully they can help mum feel better again and start to eat and not feel depressed. The district nurse came to mum and dads house today, and said to dad that has he considered taking mum off the chemo tablets as they are just delaying the inevitable. It has really upset my dad and he needs support not some silly nurse saying things like that. To be honest, not many of them have been any help. Somedays they just sit and look at her and haven't done much. They don't know if she has piles or a relapse. So if they don't know, we certainly dont know how to treat it. She really needs to get into this hospice. I feel that no-one only the top man at Christies has even given us any hope, quite a lot of docs are very matter of fact and negative. The top haemotologist has always said mum was doing very well and was very pleased with her progress, but in the last few weeks, her leukaemia has spread, so they have upped her chemo. Now if we take mum off the chemo, her blasts will get worse and she will feel even tireder, and won't eat at all. She was like this when she first got diagnosed last Oct. I wish I knew if the chemo is helping her, or killing her.. Roll on Tuesday/Wed, please let me mum get better. Binnie xx

Thinking of you at this difficult time - our macmillan nurse -  came to see mum on the Monday before she died and all she chatted about was going for 3 weeks holiday to Cyprus

Hopefully the hospice will give Mum (and Dad) some much needed comfort

    BIG HUGS

    Hiya Chris

The Macmillan nurse has been great, but it was a different district nurse that upset dad.

She said that she sees this so many times and that they just keep giving people chemo tablets to keep them going, when in fact they are delaying the inevitable.

I'm glad I wasn't there, I think I would have thrown her out of the house by her ears.

Went to see mum tonight. She was so tired and weary.

She was in bed when I went, but got up to sit with me and my husband for about 20 mins.

But then she gets stomach cramps and has to go to the toilet. She gets diaorrhea often, but that could be because she isn't eating much at all.

But then this morning, she was constipated.

Even going to the toilet, takes it out of her.

I gave her a hot water bottle and a polo mint to suck on to try and settle her stomach.

She seemed rested when I left.

Think she is looking forward to going to the hospice so they can help her feel better.

    Fingers crossed that they can.

    xx

Binnie, I wish i could help in some way.  How insensitive is the nurse??   Obviously she has never been in this sort of situation.  I hope the hospice can help your mum.  Love and angel hugs x x Patricia x x

Oh Dev, thats who you are. We have met in the chat room a few times lately.

Nice to see you in person. xxx

The thing that worries me most is mums stomach pains. But that could be with not eating and having the runs.

Somebody suggested that maybe mum is really constipated and that it looks like runs, and maybe a stool could be stuck inside mums bottom creating the stomach cramp.

I hope she can manage to stay awake and the hospice can do their magic.
