Oesophageal cancer radiotherapy

Less than one minute read time.
My dad has had a disaster of chemo which was stopped after one cycle and had now been referred for radiotherapy. (Op out of the question due to existing heart condition). What is radiotherapy like? The literature from the hospital like to portray it as being all rosy and few side effects but since dad had every side effect going with chemo (and then some!) I would like to be ready for the worst. Since the chemo will be on his chest, will it burn? Does cream help? I read that arnica cream may help? What do I do? The worst thing about this disease is that every case is so different and it seems like no one goes through it the same as another.

  • Had radiotherapy 13 sessions over 5 weeks on my chest and under my arms and neck.I had breast cancer.

The treatment itself is pain free as far as I was concerned and they will give your Dad some cream to put on to help keep the area moisturised.

The redness will increase towards the end of the treatments which looks and feels like bad sunburn.

The radiotherapy staff will keep an eye on things. Try not to worry.

Best of luck to your Dad.

Hope you do not have too far to travel as this is the tiring part of the process.

    Love

    Hi there,

I had radiotherapy to my neck. I was told to put aqueous cream on my neck and it helped a lot...I was also told to put it in the fridge to keep it cold. My neck did get burnt but everyone is different and it depends on how many sessions and the amount of radio you get given.

Your Dad will probably have a planning session before he starts and I'm sure his oncologist or other staff will let him know about possible side effects. I was given some fact sheets which were really helpful :)

Anyway, I hope it goes well for your dad.

    HI,

Haven't had any experience of radio therapy treatment but I do know that Aloa vera gel (the natural one! from the health store), you know the actual gel, not just cream with aloa vera in it, well it is amazing for curing burns etc.   I think it would be good for radio therapy also, but best just check with the nurses.
